Excerpt from the Day 7 Meditate Now EmailMethods, Forms, and Focal Points Vary The most common approach to meditation is to sit quietly in a comfortable position for a specific period of time, usually 15-60 minutes, with a focal point. Many long-time meditators continue to maintain their practice of sitting 15-60 minutes once or twice each day or several times each week. The amount of time varies, of course, and many meditators advocate sustaining a meditation position for long periods of time. My own personal opinion is that most people benefit most by meditating once a day for 20 minutes. That's what I suggest, but more importantly, I suggest that you find the appropriate time and timing for you and that you follow your own path. You need a focal point or a method that appeals to you, otherwise you're unlikely to sustain the practice. Everyone is different. After you experience the true essence of meditation (defined uniquely for yourself), the form usually becomes less and less important. Running, gardening, showering, riding on trains, singing, climbing a mountain, and having a massage are activities that can be conducive to experiencing a meditative state. Explore Different MethodsThe Meditate Now Audio Day 7 commentary encourages you to explore different methods of meditation because you are more likely to find the one or ones that fit your lifestyle. If you're enrolled in the Meditate Now Program, you'll find that the messages on Days 8, 9, and 10 provide additional information about methods as well as resources to explore.
