Excerpt from the Day 4 Meditate Now Email

Breathing is Natural

Breathing is a natural, normal function, which you usually do unconsciously. I'm an advocate of unconscious breathing, of course, and grateful that most of the time breathing is automatic. I'm also an advocate of conscious breathing.

When you breathe consciously, you focus on your breath. That focus can be transformational. Your breath moves, so your focus shifts subtly as you breathe in and breathe out. When the focus of your attention is on a neutral or pleasant subject, you relax more easily and lift your consciousness.

Your breath is always with you. Many meditators use a candle or music or constant sound for focus. These are wonderful focal points for meditation, but may not always be with you. Truly, you can use any point of focus that you find pleasant or neutral to smooth your energy and lift yourself up. You can focus on your breath with your eyes open or closed, with no one else knowing that you're practicing a relaxing technique.

More on Breathing

The Meditate Now Audio Day 4 commentary encourages you to pay attention to your breath because you can gain powerful knowledge about yourself. If you're enrolled in the Meditate Now Program, you'll find receive messages on Days 5 and 6 that continue the encouragement to be conscious of your breath. If you're not already signed up for this free program, I invite you to read about it and subscribe.
